REM sleep: a biological and psychological paradox.

چکیده

Sleep and rest can be satisfactorily explained as adaptive states1,2 whose core function is energy conservation and behavioral regulation. In addition to these functions, certain recuperative processes may be accomplished within sleep. However, the adaptive role of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep remains a complete mystery. The high levels of brain metabolic demand and attenuation of homeostatic regulationmake it difficult to understand how animals benefit from this state. Adding to the mystery, it is well known that drug induced suppression of REMsleep iswithout any striking effect on behavior. Humans taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, monoamine oxidase inhibitors and antidepressants have a massive suppression of REM sleep3 yet they do not go insane and do not have any apparent impairment of memory – indeed may have some small improvements of memory.4 Even long term usage of these drugs, with concomitant reduction or elimination of REM sleep does not generally havedeleterious effects onhealth. Indeed they are often given to regulate blood pressure or improvemood. Similarly, no cognitive or health impairment has been identified in the fewhumanswho have lost REM sleep because of brain injury.5 So, REM sleep truly has earned the name “paradoxical sleep,” first given to it by the French researcher Michel Jouvet because of its waking electroencephalogram (EEG) during behavioral sleep. It should be noted that in contrast to the findings in humans, deprivation of rats of REM or non REM sleep by the disk over water method can be lethal.6 However, this may well be due to stress involved in repeated arousals rather than sleep loss itself. Lethal effects of sleep loss have not been reported in mice, cats or other animal sleep subjects. Soweare leftwith a profoundquestion;whydoall landmammals (but not necessarilymarinemammals1,7) andmany, perhaps all birds have REM sleep8 if it uses so much energy and can apparently be dispensed with without obvious negative consequences? Several recent papers in this journal address aspects of this paradox.9–14

مطالعه اثر محرومیت کوتاه مدت از خواب متناقض بر نوروژنز ناحیه هیپوکامپ و حافظه فضایی موشهای صحرایی نر بالغ

Background: Sleep is a universal circadian biological rhythm which is seen among all vertebrate and has two separate steps including REM and Non-REM. Total or partial sleep deprivation would lead to cognitive dysfunction. It seems that the cognitive dysfunction following sleep deprivation is resulted from cellular changes in certain area involved in this phenomenon. Regarding the role of ...

O7: The Mechanistic Role of Sleep in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Around 75% of civilians have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lives, and this number is considerably higher in many parts of the world, as well as in military veterans and first responders. Of those exposed to trauma, 15-25% will develop Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  PTSD extracts enormous economic, health, and quality of life cost. Thus, it is critical to underst...

Spatial Learning Paradigm Can Increase Post-Stress Total Time of REM Sleep in Immobilized Rats

Background & Objective: Stress contributes to sleep-wake behavior in all animals. It seems that factors such as learning and memory processes can improve sleep disorders. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the effects of stress and learning (spatial memory) on total post-stress rapid-eye-movement (REM), non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) and waking time in rats. Materials & Met...

Effects of REM sleep deprivation during pregnancy on spatial learning of adult male offspring of rats

Introduction: There are several evidences that show various environmental stresses during pregnancy, affect physiological behavior of the offspring. In this study the effects of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep deprivation of pregnant rats on spatial learning of adult male offspring by Morris water maze were investigated. Methods: Water tank technique was used for inducing REM sleep deprivatio...

Cinnamaldehyde Antagonizes REM Sleep Reduction Induced by Immobilization Stress in Rats

Background and purpose: Sleep and stress are linked in a bidirectional manner. Immobilization stress is a simple model that could be used easily in animal studies for understanding the neurobiology of stress-sleep relationship. Cinnamaldehyde as a herbal medicine with antioxidant activities could be investigated in modulating sleep-stress interaction. Materials and methods: In the present stud...
